You know how old movies and cartoons sometimes do that thing where there's an angel and a devil perched on a character's shoulders, urging the character in opposing sides of some dilemma? That was me reading this book. As I read, my sensitive-to-feminist-issues better angel kept whimpering, "This is not okay," while the just-caught-in-the-fantasy devil growled, "You're over thinking this. Just feel all the lovely, happy Feelings."

The premise has an off-the-charts high Ick Factor. Evelyn is the sheltered, pampered by blow of the Earl of Wortham and his long deceased mistress; when the earl dies, his son auctions Evelyn, and her virginity, off to the highest bidder. Only Evelyn doesn't get it: she thinks she's being introduced around as a potential bride (which, given the cruel way her brother treats her, makes her a little bit Too Stupid to Live).

Lord Rafe Easton is the highest bidder. We're meant not to hold this against him, because he's not as boorish and crude as the other gents, and because he's not actually paying money for her (just forgiving her brother's gambling debt). He is so offended by the spectacle of the auction that it almost seems that, by "rescuing" her, he is being noble. (Feminist Angel calls foul, because just like all the other men there, he intends to make Evelyn his mistress and not give her any say in the matter, so she has not been saved from sexual slavery: he's just a kinder, gentler Master than the alternatives.)

Early in their acquaintance, Rafe takes Evelyn to St. Giles to show her the extreme poverty and degradation there. (Feminist Angel cringes at the not-so-subtle "lesson" for Evelyn: isn't it better to be a whore for one man, in a clean, fancy house, than it is to whore for many in these dirty streets? But make no mistake, girl: your only choice is to get on your back.)

Then (because he has a Tortured Past, croons Fantasy Devil by way of excuse), Rafe has to counter every tender impulse he feels toward Evelyn, and every kindness she offers him, with a cruel, humiliating reminder that they are not lovers, he cannot love her, he will not give her the respectable life she craves: she is his mistress, he will use her when and how he wants until he's done with her, and so long as she toes the line and doesn't leave first, he'll make it worth her while by settling a house and fortune on her when he goes. Icky, Icky, Icky!

It is a testament to Lorraine Heath's skill as a storyteller that I didn't throw the book at the wall at the sensible urging of Feminist Angel. Because Fantasy Devil is right: despite the Ick Factor, this story is full of delicious, seductive, romantic, warm, fuzzy, gooey, melty Feelings. Rafe's character arc, overcoming his Tortured Past to learn how to love and be loved in return, is the kind of emotionally satisfying transformation we romance addicts live for. I didn't like Evelyn nearly as well--(she goes from being Too Stupid To Live at the start of the book to unrealistic Mary Sue perfection by the end, providing Rafe sublime sexual and emotional healing despite her total innocence)--but she does grow a bit of a backbone by the end, so I'll cut her some slack.

Whether you will enjoy this book may depend upon whether Feminist Angel or Fantasy Devil holds more sway with you. For me, Feminist Angel made me deeply uncomfortable with this book, but the notion of a benevolent Master holds some appeal, at least in fantasy, so I was able to enjoy the romance despite my discomfort. For others, Evelyn's lack of agency may be a hard limit.

Lord of Wicked Intentions Lost Lords of Pembrook Lorraine Heath 9780062100030 Books Reviews

Let me preface by saying I am a difficult critic on books. It takes a small miracle for me to give a 5 star rating on a romance read. This is the first one. I've read this book twice and I will probably read it again.

Very well developed hero and heroine will instantly captivate you. An amazingly believable innocent heroine and a cold distrusting troubled hero form a bond out of their mutually troubled past, present and what could possibly be the future. They both have heartbreaking stories and hidden sides of themselves that are brought forth unexpectedly. The characters do not leave you lacking for substance and Ms. Heath folds in substance and weaves some magic throughout the entire book.

This can be read as a stand alone, even though the other 2 in the series are well worth checking out. You'd do well to read it at least twice. ;)
I did a review of this book. Rafe antormented hero and full of rage and resentment against his brothers who deserted him in a workhouse. Escape and live in the streets an urchin, the scoundrels of st James come to my mind. Mrs Health knows how to write tormented hero. The heroine Evelyn other naive girl sale by her own brother as she will an apple. Her sufferings come to and end and Rafe becomes the brother and forgive his brother reconnect it with them and marriage Evelyn, her brother get his reward become a pariah among the ton and retired to the country because no family will received him and allowed him to marriage their daughters. He will die along and waiting for death and his coins in will inherit the title and property.
I have read many books from this author and in general like her books. But I really struggled with this one. In my opinion, the h was a little too naive to take seriously. (Spoilers ahead) For example, when she makes the choice to become the H's mistress and goes shopping with him and sees for herself the great cost of the clothing. Then a bit further in the story, she acts surprised that she owes so much to the H because she didn't consider the cost of the "minutia" of daily life. It was hard to like the story when for the better part of the novel, both H & h are basically embroiled in their own thoughts of why they shouldn't or can't be together than actual interaction. It was hard for me to like the h when the whole time she's whining about why she couldn't have the life of a lady when she knew her mother was a mistress and society's dictates at that time. Her personality was hard to like as she didn't seem to know what she really wanted and would do a lot of mental complaining. I mean, if she didn't want to be a mistress, she could have walked away as she does at one point in the finale when she feels that the H isn't corresponding her love so there she proves she could leave. Instead she makes a "decision" to be the H's mistress and then does a lot of back and forth in her mind to the point that I was pretty frustrated with her "I don't like it, but I won't do anything about it" mindset. I liked the H a bit more but it was hard for me to fall for his character because he spent most of the novel thinking how much he liked the h but wasn't good enough for her. I mean, I can take that mentally for part of the novel but, in the end, I was also growing frustrated with him as well. The novel was generally slow moving and boring for me. The end was wrapped up too quickly. I'm a person who's lost a good amount of sleep because I generally have a hard time putting down a book, even if the story isn't that amazing. So I was very surprised to struggle so much with this book, I read it here and there and then was bored and would put it down. I ended up skimming through the end because I had lost interest in the character's love story. I'm giving it 3 stars instead of the 1 star I felt like putting out of respect to the author since she's penned some of my favorite romantic novels. I wouldn't recommend this unless you decided you want to read every book the author has written.
