Telling Tales Vera Stanhope Book 2 edition by Ann Cleeves Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is a very good Vera Stanhope mystery - however, it isn't new. It was published in the UK in 2005 and just now published in the US. When I received it on my Kindle, I read one page and realized I had read it several years ago after buying a used UK paperback from Amazon. It would be helpful if Amazon would include both original publication dates as well as secondary ones in its book blurbs. Since this title was offered as a preorder several months ago, the implication was that it was a new Ann Cleeves title. If the original date had been included in the description, it would have saved me the cost of the supposedly new book.

Telling Tales Vera Stanhope Book 2 edition by Ann Cleeves Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

"'I'm Vera Stanhope. Inspector. Northumbria police. A case like this they send an outsider in. Fresh eyes. You know. Check they did everything right the first time round.'"

Cleeves portrays her Inspector as a very unlikable, larger than life character. She reminds me a lot of Columbo...she makes like she's dim, but she's an ocean of life. Telling Tales takes us to Yorkshire, where Vera is brought in to reinvestigate a closed case. Jeanie Long, convicted of the murder of a fifteen-year-old girl ten years earlier, commits suicide on the anniversary of her sentencing just when a witness comes forward to prove her innocence. What really did happen all those years ago? In a town as small as Elvet, everybody's got something to hide...and they don't appreciate Vera's nosy questions. But she's so great at what she does, even when we know that she's as lonely as they come, and probably drinks too much. You have to love her! And I do. I found very few characters to like in this one, but the reveal was so good! Five pages until the end and I was still dumbstruck. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
TELLING TALES by Ann Cleeves is the second title in the Vera Stanhope series.
I am just getting acquainted with Vera and I am glad I did. I segued into ‘Vera’ after reading Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series.
Inspector Stanhope is called in to reinvestigate a ten year old crime where a young woman, Jeanie Long, was convicted of murdering her lover’s young daughter. New evidence has come to light, plus whispers of a botched investigation. It appears Jeanie may not be guilty after all.
The detailed characters and sense of place drew me into this mystery. Vera is a one of a kind personality and I quite adore her. How she unravels the relationships among all the characters , especially their relationships with their parents is not only brilliant but very unsettling.
Police procedures, suspense, mystery, psycho drama, a strong sense of place and crooked businessmen all combine to create a great mystery.
I have watched the Vera series on Prime. Excellent British mystery in the manner Brits excel at great character development, credible plots and wonderful character actors like Brenda Blethyn as the lead character. I decided to read the series by Cleeves that started it all and was thrilled to see what a wonderful writer she is.The character development I loved on TV came straight from Cleeves' pen. Great people, great sense of place, credible motivations. I'm looking forward to reading the whole series.
Vera Stanhope is a compelling character. This story begins slowly, because Vera is not on stage. The mystery centers on a cold case murder of a teenaged girl in a village. The father’s jilted mistress was tried and convicted for the murder and sentenced to life in prison. When she is not recommended for parole, she commits suicide. Ironically, new evidence of her innocence has just become known, and the case is about to be reopened. It is too late to prevent the suicide and much to late to correct the harm from the wrongful conviction, but it is never to late to find the real murderer. Vera is sent from her home jurisdiction to be the fresh set of eyes to both find the murderer and consider where the police investigation went wrong. Ann Cleeves writes mystery stories that are a cut above much of the genre. She has two main series the Vera Stanhope series and the Shetland Island series. Both are very fine, with skillful writing, a strong sense of place, complex plotting, and good pacing. The Vera Stanhope books are police procedurals. I have been reading them out of order as they become available on , and it does not matter. The character of Vera totally drives these books. If this were a stage play, all eyes would be glued to Vera. Vera is outsized, rumpled, persistent, and abrupt at times. She lives alone and suffers from eczema. Not your typical lead character, but one of the best ever created for a mystery series. Like Columbo, no one is going to get anything past Vera as she relentlessly heads toward justice. The only weak link in this book is the slow beginning which suffers from multiple points of view and a lack of Vera. It is work slogging through that to get to the rest of the book.
