Before I started writing romance, I read it. My sister and I have been Eileen Dryer fans since she wrote Silhouette Intimate Moments a loooong time ago. Then we followed her into suspense, where she gave me several ROTFL moments and at least one roaring case of the creeps. (Shudder). Now I have belatedly discovered this wonderful historical series. NOMNOMNOMNOM! God, I luvs me some good historicals. This one is the kind that makes you cry and giggle and pant a little at strategic moments. Dryer has always had a talent for creating damaged heroines with snarky senses of humor who somehow overcome every dark situation the find themselves in. All three books of the Drakes Rakes series are tremendous fun, with quirky characters, lots of humor, and some deeply terrifying moments. I think Always A Temptress is my favorite of the three so far, though I did find Diccan and Grace's book, Never A Gentleman, kinda hot in places. Not erotic romance, but still. Yum. As for Barely A Lady, Jack and Olivia made me sigh at the Happily Ever After. If you love a good historical, you need to get all three. Read 'em in order though. You'll be glad you did.

Great fast paced series! Loved this book and loved all the Drake Rakes book. It has it all...romance, tenderness, thrill rides.

I read all of this series. It was interesting and ok.
part of a series by this author involving traitorous plots against the English crown, really nasty villians, great atmosphere, and heart-catching romance. The whole series is excellent, and this book does not let the reader down. I read it in one night and then re-read it!
There was just way too much melodrama in this installment of the Drake's Rakes series. Yes, the heroine had had a tough life but goodness the misery just kept piling on and felt overdone and unrealistic. The hero was fine but I didn't really care about him too much, he was a bit bland. I had read the first two books and even though it had been a while, I remembered enough to be able to follow the story; I'm not sure it would work as a stand alone, it is very much a continuation from the last installment. I definitely wouldn't start the series with this one. I didn't love this book and at best would say it was just okay. But I like Eileen Dreyer's writing and will probably check out the next one.
Since other reviews have already detailed the plot, I will simply state my views on the overall book. I gave it 4 stars with no problem but there were some issues for me. I thought the book very dark and both hero and heroine had deep psychological problems. However the author drew you in and made you feel for both characters and hope they could come to terms with their pasts. Eileen Dreyer makes you understand and feel the pain of the characters. You are almost compelled to see how they resolve it all. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because I generally read a little more light hearted romances. This book however is one you should not miss if you like the deeper and slightly darker romance. I will be reading the next book on Drakes Rakes and can hardly wait for Drake himself to have a romance. I am also interested in what really happened to Ian. Perhaps I should have given it 5 stars! If you are in to the Drakes Rakes series it is a MUST read.
